I taught Ms Lentini in the unit Exploring Digital Media: Contexts of Online Participation, in which she displayed an outstanding aptitude for the subject. This unit was gamified with a virtual currency to track student online engagement and Ms Lentini was part of a very select group of students who achieved the highest scores in this points system. This achievement involved active participation in a real-world learning environment that comprised intense interactions via microblogging, podcasting, blogging, and video creation (ranging from six-second Vines to seven-minute edited productions for YouTube). Assignments in the unit consisted of the construction of multimedia blog posts integrating customised images, infographics, Prezis, SlideShare slideshows, and embedded YouTube videos and/or SoundCloud podcasts. The unit gave particular emphasis to how to strategically negotiate one’s identity on diverse media platforms ranging from Twitter to LinkedIn, and the legal and ethical use of source material (with an emphasis on copyright and Creative Commons). 

The practical application of diverse media platforms that saw Ms Lentini positioned in the top ten percent of a very large cohort of over 200 students underlines exceptionally strong communication skills, advanced digital literacy, and a collegial attitude toward peers that was well respected by both students and teachers alike. I would also emphasise that the vast majority of the above-mentioned activity was not mandated by formal assessment, but voluntarily partaken in.
